Kungsleden - Sweden's Legendary King's Trail
The Kungsleden (King's Trail) is Sweden's most famous long-distance hiking trail, stretching 440 km through the spectacular mountain landscapes of Swedish Lapland. From Abisko in the north to Hemavan in the south, this trail offers some of Europe's finest wilderness hiking.
Trail Overview
- Total length: 440 km (274 miles)
- Popular section: Abisko to Nikkaluokta (105 km, 5-7 days)
- Difficulty: Moderate - no technical skills required
- Best time: Mid-June to mid-September
- Huts: STF mountain huts every 15-25 km
Trail Sections
Abisko - Nikkaluokta (105 km)
The most popular and dramatic section, passing Sweden's highest peak Kebnekaise (2,096m). Well-maintained with huts offering beds, cooking facilities, and small shops. Allow 5-7 days.
Nikkaluokta - Saltoluokta (51 km)
Crosses Sami territory with stunning views. Includes a boat crossing. 3-4 days.
Saltoluokta - Kvikkjokk (73 km)
Through Sarek National Park foothills. More challenging with river crossings. 4-5 days.
Kvikkjokk - Hemavan (140 km)
Southern section through varied terrain. Less crowded but fewer facilities. 8-10 days.
What to Pack
- Footwear: Sturdy hiking boots (waterproof, ankle support)
- Layers: Weather changes rapidly - pack for all conditions
- Rain gear: Waterproof jacket and pants essential
- Sleeping: Sleeping bag liner for huts, full kit if camping
- Food: Carry enough between huts (can buy basics at huts)
- Navigation: Map, compass, GPS backup
Mountain Huts (Fjällstugor)
STF (Svenska Turistföreningen) maintains comfortable huts along the trail with:
- Bunk beds with mattresses
- Kitchen facilities (bring your own food)
- Wood stove heating
- Basic supplies for purchase
- No booking required (except peak season)
Cost: ~350-450 SEK/night for non-members, less for STF members
